Autism Spectrum

Often when people talk about autism, they talk about the autism spectrum. Really, there could be 10 or more disabilities identified over the next 20 years. Two segments of the spectrum are autism and aspergers. Autism is usually marked by a lack or great difficulty with joint attention and aspergers is usually marked by great difficulty in interactions and social situations.

What are some examples of aspergers?

People with aspergers generally (not always) have normal to high intelligence. They are more comfortable working with numbers and things than with people.

In how young of a child can an accurate diagnosis of Autism be given?

CR Petersen said...

Typically speaking most children with Autism can be diagnosed at 18 months to two years; however, there are some emerging techniques that allow a much earlier diagnosis. There are some articles posted here: http://currentautismresearchhopeforautism.blogspot.com/

Is there a reason Austism seems so prevelant these days? The link to the article on Functional Behavior Analysis made me realize it isn't possible to simplify a diagnosis or solution.

There are many reasons. People with the genetic predisposition are having more children. Babies are being born to older parents. Polution. Nutrition.

What if a child doesn't get the proper communication from the peers he's around so it makes it harder for him to fully communicate his needs? Would it be fair to classify him as autistic or that he just hasn't learned how to communicate yet?

When can u make a defined dignoses?

It depends. Quite often by 18 months, sometimes earlier and some times a little later. It depends on what is being manifested.

How common is it that an asbergers child is overlooked by teachers as simply, "not understanding, not listening, or obstinant towards teachers?"

It's difficult to say for sure because there are likely still many children with Aspergers who are not identified. While this may change, the diagnosis of Aspergers does not officially exist any more.

what is the earliest age that a child be diagnosed with autism or aspergers for that matter/

CR Petersen said...

It is rare, but possible to diagnose some children at 6 months...sometimes even a little earlier. The ages and stages screener is a good place to start. The Infant Toddler Program in Idaho can be a good place to refer. You can also call 211 for any referral to an Idaho program.

what are some signs of asperger's that could be red alerts that differ than those of Autism.

With the new DSM V which is recently out, the diagnosis of Aspergers has gone away and has been folded into Autism Spectrum Disorder. Typically the characteristic that I would look for though were good language but poor social skills and restrictive interest or repetitive behaviors.

Is it true that many people who have Aspergers, or are on the Autism Spectrum also have high IQ's in certain areas. Be it mathmatics, musical ability, or problem solving, but severely lack in social skills?

CR Petersen said...

Technically with the new DSM V Aspergers is no longer an official diagnosis. People with Aspergers are now diagnosed primarily with Autism Spectrum Disorder or ASD. There are many people with ASD who have very poor social communication skills and who are excellent in fields such as mathematics and engineering.

The doctors I work with haven't mentioned "Aspergers" in their diagnoses long before the new DSM came out. It was absorbed into ASD, as you mentioned in the other posts above. But it isn't like other ASD disorders... it's almost like a different spectrum entirely and that bothers me. Are the DSM V folks just trying to simply the matter before it gets out of hand?

Is aspergers a form of autism then since it is part of the autism spectrum? I have an autistic cousin whom I don't believe has joint problems so would he more likely have aspergers? I've never heard of aspergers which is why I'm so curious of this.

My son wasn't diagnosed with aspergers until he was 4. They said it was hard to diagnose aspergers because it really is just a bunch of smaller issues rolled into one and you have to try and treach each. Issue until you get to the right balance that works for your child.
